Problem
The length of a rope is measured to be 5 m, correct to the nearest 0.1 m. It is cut into many pieces of rope such that the length of each rope is measured to be 10 cm, correct to the nearest 1 cm. Find the maximum number of pieces that can be cut this way.
Solution

Hints:

53

Convert units: 5 \\text{ m} = 500 \\text{ cm}. Upper limit of rope = 5.05 \\text{ m} = 505 \\text{ cm}. Lower limit of each piece = 9.5 \\text{ cm}. Maximum number of pieces = \\lfloor \\frac{505}{9.5} \\rfloor = \\lfloor 53.1578 \\rfloor = 53.
